There are flight delays in Calgary due to an interruption in air traffic control

Flights are being delayed at Calgary International Airport this morning because the airport’s navigation system is suffering from a disruption.

An airport spokesman confirmed to CBC News that a system outage with Nav Canada has caused ongoing problems.

There is also a constant problem with WestJet’s self-service luggage drop, although previous issues across the country related to online payment infrastructure and services have been resolved.

Self-service baggage delivery does not work properly in Calgary, as well as in Ottawa, Saskatoon and Halifax.

“Guests are advised to arrive early and check the status of the flight before going to the airport,” says a statement posted by the airline on its Twitter channel.

Nav Canada, which operates the country’s air navigation system, said the disruption was caused by one of its telecommunications service providers, Zayo. According to Nav Canada, Zayo estimated a restoration time of two to four hours starting at 8:30 a.m. MT.

“Ensuring the safe movement of air traffic in Canadian airspace is Nav Canada’s top priority,” Nav Canada spokesman Brian Boudreau said in an email.

“As such, air traffic control will temporarily reduce the flow of departures and arrivals in some situations until Zayo has restored service. There are procedures to ensure the safety of aircraft in our airspace.”

Due to system interruptions NAV CANADA and WestJet, guests flying through YYC may experience delays. We appreciate your patience as we support your efforts to resolve issues. Please check with your airline for flight information. We will provide updates as they become available.

The airport spokesman said more updates will be provided as they become available.

A spokesman for the Greater Toronto Airports Authority said the disruption appears to be affecting only western Canada, adding that operations at Toronto’s Pearson Airport are normal.
