Scottish journalist Isabel Hilton has hit back at Liz Truss’ controversial comments, with Hilton claiming they show “there is no future for us with a Liz Truss England”.
The foreign secretary, who polls suggest is likely to become the next prime minister, slammed the SNP leader before once again ruling out a second independence referendum.
Truss, speaking at a hustings event in Exeter, referred to growing up in Paisley before saying: “I feel like I’m a son of the Union, I really think we’re a family and we’re better together and I think the best. What it has to do with Nicola Sturgeon is to ignore her.”
Truss’s comments attracted a lot of outrage, with MP John Swinney calling them “completely unacceptable”, and even some former Tory MSPs and Better Together campaigners calling them “inappropriate”.

Speaking to BBC News on Saturday 6 August, Hilton commented on Truss’s comments, calling them “frankly shocking”. She said: “You can’t accuse her, a serious politician, of seeking attention and say you’re going to ignore her.

“The Scottish people have repeatedly voted the SNP into power. What does that say to the Scottish people? It says there is no future for us with a Liz Truss England.”
Hilton’s comments were widely praised, with one person replying: “Liz Truss could have handed us independence on a plate…delicious.”

Sturgeon herself broke her silence on Truss’ attacks with a tongue-in-cheek tweet on Friday afternoon.
Sharing a photo of a seal on Twitter, she said: “Saw this beautiful seal in beautiful Argyll,” she shared. “I think he might be a bit of an attention seeker,” followed by a winking face emoji.
