We did it, obsessive fellows of This Is Us: We reached the final flash-forward of the NBC series.
As those of you who have seen popular drama for years know, the Pearson family saga has often gone from its current history to a look at the future. One such group was linked to Kate’s marriage to Philip. Another was about the last hours of Rebecca’s life, the culmination of which took place in last week’s episode.
And a third was dealing with Kate and Toby’s son, Jack. A flash-forward that began in the season 4 premiere revealed that Jack grew to become a very successful singer and songwriter (so much so that we started calling him Rockstar Jack to differentiate him from his avi, Jack Pearson).
Subsequent episodes showed us other snippets of Jack’s adult life, from a Thanksgiving meal that showed that Pearson’s holiday traditions lived up to the day his wife, Lucy, gave light his daughter, Hope.
And the end of Tuesday’s series gives us a more (ephemeral) look at Jack’s life: this time, he and Lucy are pushing Hope on a swing, on a montage of other members of the Pearson family who they do it with their children. Why a light touch on the flash advance button at the end, you ask? “We never planned to live long in 2040 or whatever it was that year,” Fogelman told reporters during a call Tuesday. “Obviously, there are more stories to tell in adult life [The Big Three’s] children and grandchildren, but that was never the intention of the series. Every book has to end. “
