Calgary police responded to the Northwest Capitol Hill community on the 1500 block of 21st Avenue NW around 2 p.m. and found an elderly woman with serious injuries from a dog attack. Investigators believe the woman was in an alley behind doing garden work when a neighbor’s dogs escaped from her yard and attacked her.
Police believe the dogs are owned by a neighbor and not by the victim or the victim’s family.
EMS said the woman was transported to Foothills Medical Center in a life-threatening condition. Calgary police said Sunday night that the woman later died at the hospital.
A general investigation unit is investigating the attack while senior investigators and the CPS homicide unit are consulting with them, Calgary police said. Officers are also working with the ordinance services as there are animals involved.
The investigation is ongoing.
Police said the next steps for an incident like this depend on what is found in the investigation, but could lead to charges such as negligence causing death or a felony. Dogs could also be captured or slaughtered.
