The Ontario Civilian Police Commission says the head of the Thunder Bay Police Service will face a hearing on three charges of alleged misconduct under the Police Services Act.
The commission says this comes after an investigation began in February.
The OCPC then raised concerns about the ability of senior executives to manage the day-to-day operations of the “good faith” police service and in compliance with the Police Services Act.
Today, local media reported that the chief, Sylvie Hauth, will retire in June 2023.
The Thunder Bay police service has been under intense scrutiny in recent months, and Indigenous leaders are calling for the service to be completely disbanded due to eroded trust in the community.
In a 2018 systemic review, the Office of the Independent Director of Police Review found evidence of systemic racism in the Thunder Bay Police Service and that it was affecting investigations into the deaths of Indigenous people.
