Tornado alert declared in parts of western Manitoba

A tornado warning was in effect Thursday night for parts of western Manitoba, including Dauphin, Russell, Roblin, Winnipegosis, Minnedosa and Riding Mountain National Park.

Environment Canada issued the notice shortly before 9:30 p.m.

A severe storm potentially capable of producing a tornado can also cause damaging winds, hail and heavy rain, the federal agency said.

“This is a dangerous and life-threatening situation,” says Environment Canada. “Cover yourself immediately if threatening weather is approaching. If you hear a roaring noise or see a funnel cloud, debris swirling near the ground, flying debris, or any threatening weather approaching, take refuge immediately”.

A strong rotation is possible near Millwood, and Binscarth is also on the way to the storm.

For anyone who sees a funnel cloud, Environment Canada recommends going indoors and staying in a basement, bathroom, staircase, or closet.

Clocks and warnings of severe storms were also issued in much of western and southern Manitoba, except in the southeastern province.

More information on alerts and clocks is available on the Environment Canada website.
