Tornado clocks issued for the Ottawa-Gatineau area

Environment Canada says conditions could create severe storms capable of producing tornadoes this afternoon in western Quebec and most of eastern Ontario.

Tornado clocks cover most of eastern Ontario, except Belleville, Brockville, Cornwall, Deep River and Kingston, and all of western Quebec.

Clocks are emitted when Environment Canada determines that conditions are favorable for the development of storms strong enough to include a tornado.

Tornado warnings are issued when a tornado has been reported or there is credible evidence that it is imminent.

If a tornado warning is issued, Environment Canada recommends going inside a room on the lowest possible floor of a strong building, away from the exterior walls.

If you can’t get in, lie down and protect your head. Do not look for the cover of the trees, which may fall.

Storms can bring wind gusts of 90 to 110 miles per hour in eastern Ontario, as well as heavy hail.

The Kingston and Belleville areas have severe storm clocks, and while Environment Canada says it can’t completely rule out a tornado, winds and hail seem more likely in those areas.

Tornado clocks arrive less than a month after a weak tornado in the Casselman, Ontario area, and a devastating straight wind storm that cut off power to hundreds of thousands of customers in the region and killed at least 10 people in Ontario and Quebec.
