The City of Toronto recently made the decision to open the market longer as part of a year-long pilot project after a review of its hours of operation that included public comment and an assessment of how “the improving the operation can better serve Toronto residents and visitors.” in the city.”
“The revised schedule will make the market more accessible, with service hours that adapt to the changing needs and preferences of visitors. The changes include having the market open on Sundays, and later opening times in the morning and closing times in the evening on weekdays,” they said in a statement.
“As Toronto’s economy recovers, the market is now able to relaunch extended hours of operation.”
The city said the outcome of this pilot will “inform a more permanent operational schedule for the remainder of 2023 and beyond.”
Traders were given three months’ notice of these changes. Management has worked and will continue to work with traders to help them find the necessary staff to “sufficiently implement the new opening hours”.
In March 2020, the Sant Llorenç market was in the process of launching a pilot project to extend its operating hours, but this initiative was halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Instead, the market’s hours of operation were modified and actually reduced to align with the COVID-19 health and safety measures.
“In 2020 we pivoted as COVID-19 affected previous launch plans, we are now moving forward with this exciting pilot. The new hours of operation pilot modernizes market operations and ensures that more people, residents and visitors to our city, have the opportunity to experience this incredible and historic Toronto destination,” Mayor John Tory said in a statement.
“It is very exciting that the Sant Llorenci market is launching extended operating hours again. I want to thank the many companies that make the market such a special place.”
