UPDATE 5.15 pm
The Department of Transportation says it has proactively closed Highway 1 between Lytton and Spences Bridge due to expected rainfall and the possibility of debris flows.
The highway will be closed overnight and re-inspected in Saturday daylight.
“The team and crews are mobilized and ready to carry out any cleaning or repairs that may be necessary to reopen the highway safely,” the ministry said in a statement.
ORIGINAL 16:40 h
The Trans Canada Highway is closed between Lytton and Spences Bridge due to “road junk”.
DriveBC says there is debris and mud on the highway and an assessment is being done. There is no estimated reopening time, but it must be updated at 6 p.m.
The area was burned by forest fires last year, leading to a reduction in slope stability and a greater chance of landslides this year.
The next Highway 8 remains closed due to the damage caused by the November floods.
