Tribute comes to musician and actor Gwynedd who “was always ready with a smile”

Tributes have come to a talented Gwynedd actor and musician who died suddenly. Dyfrig Evans, 43, is known for his role in Rownd a Rownd and for being the lead singer of the Welsh band Topper, who died on Thursday.

The father of two, originally from Penygroes, was known to many as “Dyfrig Topper”, reports BBC Cymru Fyw. Those who knew him described him as “a wonderful soul full of talent, fun, enthusiasm and positive energy.”

Ysgol alumnus Dyffryn Nantlle moved to Scotland in the early 2000s, but for five years before she played the character of Arwel Jones – or Ari Stiffs – in the series Rownd in Rownd. In an interview to commemorate the series’ 21st anniversary, he said being part of the series had “fulfilled a dream” for him.

In 2002, he joined the cast of Talcen Caled as the character of Huw Williams. He was also part of the Emyn Roc series in Roll, playing the character Eryl, a member of the band and one of the main characters.

Dyfrig also appeared in Estate Tipyn, White and Dark Astra. Between 2017 and 2018, she played Kevin in two Darren Door Next series.

S4C content director Llinos Griffin-Williams has said the actor will find himself “trembling to miss.” He said: “Dyfrig ‘s talent included beloved characters for our children’s content and more subversive characters for series like Talcen Caled.

“Not to mention his unquestionable skill and contribution as a musician. Our sympathies are with his family and friends.”

In his early teens he became a member of the Paladr band with his brother Iwan Evans, and in 1995 they released their first song called “Dwi’m yn gwbod. Pam?” By 1996, the group’s name had changed to Topper.

After releasing three albums, the group disbanded in 2001, but in 2006 Dyfrig released an album called Idiom as a solo musician. In 2019, he finished third in the Song for Wales competition with the song LOL. Describing his death as a “great loss”, JigCal’s record label thanked Dyfrig “for the everlasting songs”.

Actor Emlyn Gomer Roberts was one of many who worked with him on projects and described him as “a naturally instinctive actor, with a comedic moment and a talented musician.” According to BBC Radio Cymru chief Dafydd Meredydd, Dyfrig was a “huge character” who “was always ready with a smile and a lively conversation”.

He added: “The Welsh rock scene is calmer today and I will feel the loss of Dyfrig on a personal and professional level. But one thing is certain: his music and spirit will last.”

Super Furry Animals musician Gruff Rhys said: “Sad and shocking news: the sweet tones of Dyfrig, Topper and Paladr are unforgettable.” Rhian Cadwaladr, who became a mother on the Rownd a Rownd series, said his “natural talent was evident” from a very young age. He said on Facebook, “Sleep easy, Little Dyfs.”

Presenter Aled Hughes echoed his feelings and described him as “one of those bright stars who will stay forever.” Dyfrig leaves his children and his wife Elaine.
