Welcome to our live coverage of today’s hearing of the Select Committee to Investigate the January 6 attack on the United States Capitol.
In today’s hearing – the last scheduled – the committee is expected to focus on what former President Donald Trump did – or didn’t do – during a period of about three hours while the violence was taking place .
The Democratic-led committee has accused the former president of doing nothing to quell the unrest or tell his supporters to leave, which could endanger politicians as well as his own Vice President Mike Pence.
The hearing is the eighth in a series of hearings aimed at investigating the riot and determining culpability. The group has been investigating the attack for the past year, interviewing more than 1,000 witnesses and amassing tens of thousands of documents.
While no further hearings have been scheduled, the panel plans to continue its investigation and more hearings are likely in the future. It can issue criminal referrals to the Justice Department, leaving it to Attorney General Merrick Garland to decide whether Trump or others should be prosecuted.
