Scientists are searching for dangerous asteroids hidden in our solar system using the Twilight Telescope.
NASA’s Office of Planetary Defense Coordination monitors the sky with telescopes and tracks upcoming high-profile flybys of asteroids and other space objects. However, despite this continuous monitoring, there are some potentially dangerous asteroids that remain hidden. Reason? They are hidden by the glare of the sun. NASA’s telescopes are blinded by the Sun and therefore cannot detect these dangerous asteroids. Therefore, they have sought to hunt them down in the Twilight Zone. They may seem dangerous, but astronomer Scott Sheppard of the Carnegie Institution for Science in Washington DC suggests that the asteroids that lurk between Earth and the sun can help scientists shed light on the history of the solar system. Sheppard explained that these asteroids remain undiscovered because telescopes tend to look away from our planet to avoid glare from the sun. However, new surveys looking in the other direction are discovering more NEOs and some of them are never-before-seen asteroids.
“New telescope surveys are fighting the Sun’s glare and searching for asteroids toward the Sun during twilight,” Sheppard wrote in a column in the latest Science magazine. As shared, the findings include the first asteroid with an inner orbit around Venus called ‘Aylochaxnim 2020 AV2, as well as the asteroid 2021 PH27 with the shortest known orbital period around the Sun. Some of these are “city killers”, asteroids. They are large enough to severely impact Earth.
Sheppard is conducting the twilight survey using the Dark Energy Camera (DECam) on the 4-meter VĂctor M. Blanco telescope at the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory (CTIO) in Chile to observe a previously hidden asteroid world that is they have hidden because of the glare of the sun.
