Jordan Peele’s Nope has been the talk of the town for the past few days, becoming one of the most anticipated films of the season.
The director’s sci-fi take recently premiered in Los Angeles, garnering immense praise with critics calling it his “most ambitious film” to date. The film, which just opened today, sees Daniel Kaluuya star alongside Keke Palmer in this summer blockbuster. In a conversation with Variety, Peele talked about the film and the inspirations behind it,
“We tried to make it a big summer hit that you can enjoy as much as you want. You want to come in and smoke a big blunt and talk to a friend about social issues, you can. If you want to come relax and get away from it all and see Keke Palmer in the middle of a UFO, this is what we have for you.
The film sees Kaluuya reuniting with Palmer as a pair of brothers who discover that an alien spaceship has hovered over their family’s horse ranch. When the duo sets out to capture the spaceship on camera, their mission takes a turn. The two are joined by Steven Yuen, Brandon Perea, Michael Wincott, Wrenn Schmidt and Keith David. Critics gave Peele the thumbs up and compliments, with many of them calling it “out of this world” and “thrilling”. Other accolades include calling the film a “resounding YES” and a show that is “absolutely phenomenal.”
Check out some of the critics’ Twitter reactions. Nope is now in theaters nationwide.
#NopeMovie is another world but indescribable. From moments of terror to heartfelt moments between the characters, #No is an experience that won’t be easy to get over when you find yourself picking your jaw up from the floor. Jordan Peele has done it again! @nopemovie pic.twitter.com/bUr1ad5TAx

Jordan Peele’s Nope is his most confident, freewheeling and potentially most divisive vision yet. Swapping horror exclamation marks for sci-fi question marks, it’s less about scares. With hints of Close Encounters, Jaws and more, #NopeMovie is a veritable puzzle box. pic.twitter.com/Ny3EVaLTqW

Jordan Peele’s #Nope is one of the best movies I’ve seen this year! It’s terrifying and fierce, but also very funny and unlike any UFO movie you’ve ever seen. It’s a totally unique and VERY entertaining horror epic full of wild surprises and an unforgettable performance by Keke Palmer pic.twitter.com/iua9HPt0RG

The most important thing to know about NOPE is that it’s crazy different from Get Out & Us. This is Jordan Peele spreading his wings and making a big budget Spielberg/esque sci-fi, but with the subtext you’d expect. Go in with an open mind and you will be rewarded. #NopeMovie

#NOPEMovie is not what you expect and the trailer doesn’t do it justice.
Jordan Peele does the unimaginable, again.
RUN, DON’T WALK TO SEE IT THIS WEEKEND.
EXCELLENT-!
SEE KEKE PALMER ABOUT ALL THE AWARDS THIS YEAR.

It’s not Jordan Peele’s most ambitious film, but it’s also his weakest. The first act is excellent, but in the second, it loses its balance and turns into a bad M. Night Shyamalan movie with Spielbergian elements. It lacks a sense of focus with a story that is never quite realized. #NopeMovie

NOPE is out of this world. A mash of monsters with great performances (especially Kaluuya) and a 1950s sci-fi invasion motif. A show about the horrors of shows.
Jordan Peele has been compared to Hitchcock, but NOPE proves that he is a new generation of Carpenter. Enjoy the show and don’t look up. pic.twitter.com/dGKwbXg0WF

I won’t spoil any aspect of @JordanPeele’s #NopeMovie except to say *big* thumbs up.
And cinematographer Hoyte Van Hoytema shot the film on @IMAX cameras, so if you’re going to see #No, watch it in IMAX. Hoytema previously shot “Tenet,” “Dunkirk” and “Interstellar.” pic.twitter.com/92z9udtRMT

#NopeMovie is a resounding YES. Watch it on the biggest screen you can find. A show as exciting and strange as anything else out there. I will never look at the sky the same way again.

So #NopeMovie is absolutely phenomenal in many ways. It perfectly combines a sci-fi show with a story that is also kind of a Hollywood account and blew my expectations away. Beautifully shot, the sound mix is thunderous and the cast shines. Love love loved it. pic.twitter.com/qdcZIvsX5T
