Two people have died after a major accident on Lougheed Highway in Maple Ridge, BC

Another person was airlifted to the hospital with “life-threatening injuries,” according to police.

Images from the site Sunday morning show severe damage to two vehicles, with a car broken in half.

“The scene of the accident was extensive with significant damage to vehicles on the road and brush,” said Dawn Roberts, a spokeswoman for the BC RCMP.

“A vehicle described as essentially split in two. The crews had to go to the brush to locate the individuals involved in the middle of those widespread wreckage and retrieve or extract people.”

Police said the crash took place around 11:30 p.m. Saturday.

The Lougheed Expressway was closed in both directions from 272nd Street to 280th Street for several hours during the night.

The cause of the accident is being investigated.

The highway reopened around 9 a.m. Sunday.
