Two men were stabbed after an argument in front of a downtown bar.

At around 7.35pm, police received a report that two men had been stabbed after an altercation outside Yates’ Wine Lodge near Queen Square Bus Station. Emergency services arrived and the two men were rushed to hospital for stab wounds.

A man told ECHO that he saw two men lying on the ground and a group of 12 to 15 people crowded around him. He said both were taken to hospital in separate ambulances.

Yates staff were also said to be among the people to help the two men who were lying on the street. The suspect, described as a black man with a slender complexion and a dark jacket, was reportedly walked to Lime Street Station.

An investigation has been opened to locate the suspect and officers remain at the scene in Queen Square while extensive CCTV, witness and forensic investigations are conducted. Anyone who has witnessed the incident or has information is asked to contact the police.

Roadblocks are underway in the Queen Square area while consultations are taking place. Detective Inspector Gavin Mulcahy said: “We are in the early stages of an investigation into a stabbing this evening that left two men seriously injured.

“We simply will not tolerate this violence in the center of our city and I want to assure everyone that we do not believe that there is any wider threat to the people in the center of the city after this incident.

“Our agents are working tirelessly to find the person responsible and bring him to justice and the police will remain at the scene tonight to conduct investigations and reassure him. The area around the station of ‘Queen Square buses would have been very crowded at the time of the incident with people coming to town or traveling home.
