Two women die after a small car and a dump truck with a trailer collided in Whitchurch-Stouffville in the early hours of Saturday, according to police.
The crash happened at the intersection of Warden Avenue and Stouffville Road. Emergency crews rushed to the scene at 8:45 p.m.
Const. Amy Boudreau, a spokeswoman for the York Regional Police, said the two people who died were the driver and passenger of the car, which was a Toyota Corolla. Closest relatives have not yet been notified. No age was released.
The coroner is at the scene.
Boudreau said the truck driver was taken to hospital with minor injuries.
No one has been arrested and no charges have been filed.
“Right now, it’s too early to determine the cause of the collision,” Boudreau told reporters near the intersection.
“We ask witnesses to come forward. Investigators will review the video, the dashcam, to fully understand what happened here today.”
Anyone with a cell phone or video from the crash control panel camera is asked to speak to investigators.
“As we learn more, we will update the community,” Boudreau said.
Police have closed roads in the area while officers are investigating the crash. The main police collision investigation unit is at the scene.
Warden Avenue, from Bethesda Road to 19th Avenue, and Stouffville Road, from Stalwart Industrial Drive to Kennedy Road, remain closed.
Drivers are asked to wait for delays and take alternative routes.
