A quartet of researchers from the University of British Columbia in Canada has estimated that the risk of one or more people being killed by uncontrolled rocket descents over the next decade is about 10%. In his article published in the journal Astronomy of natureMichael Byers, Ewan Wright, Aaron Boley and Cameron Byers describe their study on the risk of casualties in the coming years due to parts of rockets falling from the sky and what governments could do to make spaceflight more safe for people on the ground.
Over the past few decades, parts of rockets, satellites and even space stations have crashed back into Earth after fulfilling their missions. So far, no one has ever died from falling space debris, although one person is believed to have been hit: Lottie Williams was hit by rubble while walking through a park in 1997. But as she was space has matured, more rockets and satellites have been sent up, and this trend is expected to continue. In this new effort, the researchers calculated the likelihood that one or more people would be hit or killed by these objects if current practices continue.
The researchers analyzed the current number of rocket launches and the number expected to increase over the next decade. They also analyzed what happens to rocket parts when they fall back to Earth and where they tend to land. Researchers found, as expected, that most fall into the ocean, because it covers much of the planet. But they also found that as the number of rockets launched increases, so does the chance of one or more of them falling in a populated area; they report that the probability of one or more fatalities in the next decade is about 10%.
They also found that the risks are higher for people living in certain places. This is due to the flight trajectories of the rockets being sent. They found the risks to be higher in places like Indonesia, Mexico and Nigeria. They conclude that all agencies that ship vessels at the height have the ability to carry out controlled descents of rockets and their parts, but choose not to do so due to the costs involved.
