Many parts of the immediate DC area were bathed by 2 to 4 inches of rain overnight, causing flood zones. Rainfall has decreased for the time being, but areas of light to moderate could be redeveloped this morning and there may be another period of constant rainfall and even some storms embedded this afternoon. Now it looks like the rain will last longer than it had in previous forecasts.
“Streams continue to rise due to excess runoff from previous rains,” the National Meteorological Service writes. The possibility of another half inch to inch of rain during this evening could aggravate the situation.
The following rainfall map shows that a widespread area along and just west of Interstate 95 north of Virginia saw 2 to 4 inches of rain overnight. Reagan National Airport, which received about 4 inches, was close to the award. Dulles Airport received 2.32 inches, while BWI Marshall Airport recorded less, only 0.93 inches.
The Meteorological Service received over a dozen flood reports in the area during the night. Numerous streams overflowed, including parts of Rock Creek, flooding adjacent roads. Low-lying, low-drainage areas also experienced flooding, including parts of Interstate 295 that passed through the district and Interstate 395 that runs through Arlington and the district.
