Vettel calls for lifetime bans on abusive F1 fans at the Austrian GP

During the Austrian F1 race weekend, several fans have been harassed by other fans on the track, such as the use of homophobic and racist insults, shouting and other abusive comments.

F1 responded to the reports and announced that it would talk to the promoters of the Red Bull Ring race to look for measures.

Vettel has called for strong bans for fans found guilty of abuses on F1 circuits and wants a “zero tolerance” approach.

“Horrible isn’t it? I think it’s good that these things come out, that’s the beginning, but it’s horrible,” Vettel said after the Austrian GP in which he finished 17th.

“Without who these people are, they should be ashamed of themselves and they should be banned from racing for their lives.

“I think there should be zero tolerance. If people have a good time and drink too much, that’s fine, but it doesn’t justify or excuse misbehavior.

“We run like one, so the fans are part of it.”

Ahead of the Austrian GP on Sunday, F1 issued a statement on the matter: “We have been informed of reports that some fans have been the subject of completely unacceptable comments from others at the event.

“We have raised this with the promoter and security and we will talk to those who have reported these incidents and take them very seriously.

“This kind of behavior is unacceptable and will not be tolerated and all fans should be treated with respect.”

In a statement, Red Bull team leader Christian Horner added: “We are surprised to learn that there have been some incidents of abusive behavior in the stands and fan parks.

“This is completely unacceptable and we hope that security and the authorities will do it quickly, as there is no room for racing or society in general.

“We value inclusion and want a safe space for fans to enjoy our sport.”
