VIDEO: Social media buzzes after Doug Ford swallows a bee

‘It stuck in my throat’; Ontario’s premier was answering a question about hospital staffing shortages when a bee landed in his mouth

For once, no one can blame Prime Minister Doug Ford for not answering a reporter’s question.

During a live press conference Friday, a bee flew right into Ford’s mouth as he talked about the staffing shortage affecting Ontario hospitals.

“Holy Christ, I just swallowed a bee,” says the prime minister, coughing violently, in a video captured by CityNews.

Audience members, who had gathered in Dundalk, Ont., for a funding announcement, could be heard in the background. Ford drank quickly from a bottle of water and then started cracking jokes.

“It’s down here, seething now,” the Prime Minister said, pointing to his stomach. “He’s got a lot of real estate. … This is going to happen again and again.”

Although he tried to laugh through the incident, Ford was clearly uncomfortable. “It’s shoved down my throat,” he said. “Sorry guys, the little bugger got away in there.”

“That’s a classic, okay,” he continued moments later. “This is a good one. I’m going to be howling tonight watching this tape.”

Ford later joked that he might have to be “rushed to the hospital to get that bee out of here.” As many Ontarians know all too well, that would be a long wait.
