Visitor of the space that will come to Waterloo this summer

The City of Waterloo Museum will welcome Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen during a free community event on July 23 at the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex, 101 Father David Bauer Dr., 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. pm

Coinciding with its current exhibition, Health in Space, and in collaboration with the Science and Innovation Museums of Canada, the day will include a STEAM in Space vendor fair with hands-on activities and crafts.

An experienced fighter pilot in the Canadian Armed Forces, Colonel Hansen completed his basic training in 2011 and has participated in the European Space Agency’s CAVES program, during which he lived underground. He was also a member of the NEEMO 19 crew, where he lived and worked on the ocean floor in Aquarius habitat in Key Largo, Florida, simulating deep space exploration.

Hansen was in the 20th class of astronauts of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) along with Canadian astronaut David Saint-Jacques. While waiting for a flight assignment, he represents the Canadian Space Agency at NASA and works at the Mission Control Center as Capcom, the voice between Earth and the International Space Station (ISS).

The July 23 local event will be held at the Sun Life Financial Arena, and Hansen’s talk will begin at 2 p.m. Admission is free.

Local companies and educational presenters such as the Perimeter Institute and Gustav Bakos Observatory and the University of Waterloo Museum of Earth Sciences will offer STEAM learning opportunities and space research.

The Tomatosphere and Let’s Talk Science teams at the University of Guelph will present their tomatoes in the space program and lunar research activity.

Other participants include Wilfrid Laurier College of Education Moon Mission, LAUNCH Waterloo, Indus Space Inc. and the feeling of YouTube’s Dave Armory.

The day will also include Rover racing and InkSmith 3D printing.
