“We’re hurting:” Four shootings near Swope Park this weekend

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) — Police are asking for public help in finding the killers of four people shot in Kansas City this weekend.

John Matthews grew up on a block where two men were shot dead shortly before 6:00 a.m. Sunday.

“We stop the violence,” Matthews said. “Let’s love each other, you know? Let’s love each other.”

A man died in a yard near 59th and Swope Parkway. The other, found shot in the street, later died at the hospital.

“Here in Kansas City, we need to stop the violence,” he said. “Every time I turn around and look at the news or Facebook, we have a bit of violence. Someone is dead. Mass shootings. We have to do it better as a people. “

The double homicide ended a deadly weekend near Swope Park.

The first shooting death occurred Saturday morning near Blue Ridge and James A. Reed Rd. Officers responded to an injured accident. When they got there, they found a man shot dead in the driver’s seat.

Shortly after midnight on Sunday, police responded to another injury accident, three minutes away at block 8700 of Sycamore Ave.

This time, they found a woman behind the wheel.

“That person had been shot and was pronounced dead at the scene,” said Captain Leslie Forman of the Kansas City Police Department.

In all, gun violence claimed the lives of four people in three different incidents, all less than six kilometers and 20 hours apart.

“We’re hurting as a community here,” Foreman said. “I know it’s easy to see these things and think, ‘Man, I’m glad it wasn’t me.’ But you never know. We never know who’ll get caught up in that.”

Foreman said police do not believe the homicides are related.

As of Sunday afternoon, police have no suspicious information of any of the four shot dead.

Anyone with information is asked to contact KCPD. You can send an anonymous suggestion to KC Metro Crime Stoppers by calling (816) 474-TIPS.
