West Gate Bridge reopens after a serious collision

A serious collision between a car suspected of theft and a truck on the west gate bridge that closed the exit lanes since mid-morning on Tuesday has left one man critically injured.

Police reopened the bridge’s exit lanes in the mid-afternoon after a Ford Falcon XR6 collided with a truck at 10:35 a.m. near Williamstown Road, leaving the Ford looking the wrong way at the bridge and the truck thrown next to it.

Emergency services released a Ford man.

The driver of the car, a 21-year-old Wyndham Vale man, was taken to hospital, where he remains in stable condition.

A passenger in the car was also taken to hospital with critical injuries.

Police arrested three men, about 20 years old, who were going in the car, who showed false license plates and was suspected of theft. Since then, the men have been released pending further investigations.

The two men in the truck were not injured.

Police say the exact circumstances of the collision have not yet been determined.
