The tumult of 2022 — plunging stock prices, layoffs, high-profile cancellations — may have dimmed Netflix’s star as a streaming channel where top creators came together to make their passion projects. But you have to give them credit for finally releasing Blonde, director Andrew Dominik’s adaptation of Joyce Carol Oates’ novel inspired by the life of Marilyn Monroe, with its NC-17 rating intact.

More than just the rating of the film has proven to be controversial, as the release of the full trailer had many scratching their heads over star Ana de Armas’ questionable accent, but I, a fan of movie I loved Dominik’s Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. and I’d jump at the chance to watch his original three-hour cut, I’m just glad the streamer didn’t force the auteur to rework his film to fit conventional notions of commerciality. This could be the last time a director like Dominik receives a blank check from the company. At a time when big-budget adult films are a rarer thing, I’ll take what I can get. The film will release on September 28.

Cobra Kai Season 5 (September 9), the surprisingly durable and deliciously soapy continuation of the Karate Kid franchise.
Eat the Rich: The GameStop Saga (Sept. 28), a documentary about the meme-stock phenomenon that briefly made it look like us poor people had a chance to beat hedge funds in 2021.
Lou (Sept. 23), which looks like it’s about to turn Allison Janney into a Liam Neeson-in-Taken -style AARP avenger, which is pretty impressive.

Ivy & Bean (Sept. 2), three family films that adapt the beloved children’s book series about two best friends who make trouble.
Do Revenge (September 16), an absolutely over-the-top revenge drama about Gen Z’s high school world.
Rainbow (September 30), a hip and gross-looking Spanish-language import that charts the coming of age of an outcast teenager in a story inspired by The Wizard of Oz.
The Munsters (Sept. 27), the adaptation of the 1960s sitcom with the trailer that had everyone wondering why Rob Zombie had made what looks like a 1997 direct-to-video Nickelodeon movie.
Bee and Puppycat (September 6), a really adorable animated series about a young woman who can’t hold down a job and the magical cat (dog?) who tries to help her turn her life around. Originally produced independently via Kickstarter, the show has been picked up by Netflix for a new season, and older episodes will also be remade.
