Why Barrett’s “Domino” Causes NRL Coach Carousel as Clubs Struggle to Win Proven Winners

Paul Kent believes Trent Barrett’s ax has launched the NRL coaching carousel for 2023 and beyond, while struggling clubs strive to get the best coaches on offer.

With two Premier League winning coaches available to Shane Flanagan and Paul Green, clubs are reluctant to wait too long to secure their next coach for fear of losing the boat with the best coaches available.

“It’s funny because it’s like Barrett was the first domino to fall,” Kent told NRL 360.

“There are a lot of rumors right now. Brent Read came on the show and talked about Michael Maguire and the fact that the Tigers will look at where they are after 13 rounds and should be in 10 points of competition.

“Barrett is gone, so now the Bulldogs are clearly looking for a coach. Shane Flanagan and Paul Green are the two most mentioned in this area. Brad Fittler is the other.

“Then today it was said that the Titans were looking to Paul Green to take over the job there.

“That said, I spoke to Paul Green today and he said he had no contact with the Titans and I spoke to Rebecca Frizell, the owner of the Titans, and he said Justin Holbrook is very safe.”

With the Bulldogs likely to chase Flanagan or Green as their next coach, suddenly the list of proven coaches available in the NRL is reduced to one.

That’s why all clubs, whose coach’s future is uncertain, have the due diligence to look at what’s out there and make moves before it’s too late.

“Once the dominoes start to fall, clubs don’t want to stay looking for a coach when the bonuses have already been taken,” Kent explained.

“Now that Canterbury is active in the market and you have two first-rate winning coaches in Flanagan and Green, they are currently unemployed and looking for work and have declared their intention to be head coach of the NRL.

“So no one wants to hold back too long and no one wants to tell their club coach that they may not be doing so well, a teammate you have the rest of the year. .

“You don’t want to go into the market and get to Round 23 and say our guy probably doesn’t live up to it, so who do we have? Someone took it Green and someone took it Flanagan, so who else? is it available

“That’s where it’s at. It’s basically a bit of getting on your nerves and seeing how both coaches and clubs are doing.”

Paul Crawley believes it was inevitable that Green and Flanagan’s management would ask about the Bulldogs’ position, which is why other clubs should consider the future of their own coach at the same time.

“It’s a natural progression if Trent Barrett goes, if you’re taking care of Flanagan or Green to do some subtle queries to see if you’re encouraging change,” Crawley said.

“This is how this rumor is launched. It starts like this.

“You just have to look at the ladder to see that not everything is going well for the Tigers. They beat the Bulldogs over the weekend, but let’s be honest, the Bulldogs are horrible.”

Dave Riccio revealed that he pursued rumors that the Warriors were looking to unload on Nathan Brown, and while it proved to be untrue, he believes it is a case of first movement or potentially lost.

“There are similar rumors I’ve picked up regarding the Warriors and Nathan Brown,” Riccio said.

“I picked up the phone to the Warriors executive team to ask about Brown’s situation. According to Kenty, it’s not so much that the Warriors want to move to Brown now.

“Do we move before another club does? Let’s be honest, the list of candidate coaches is not long. They are the same guys who recycle.

“I mean the Warriors were quick to bring this down on Brown’s future.”

Kent believes that the fact that there are two coaches on the market who are proven winners in the NRL puts pressure on clubs with difficulty making moves to climb the ladder.

“You often don’t have two Premier League winning coaches who are still at the forefront of their game available,” Kent said.
