Why is there a “very big” possibility that Dustin Martin will not be in Richmond in 2023

Sportsday co-host Sam McClure believes there is a “very big” possibility that Dustin Martin will leave Richmond at the end of the season.

Three-time medalist Norm Smith still has two years left for his deal, becoming an unrestricted free agent at the end of the 2024 season.

But McClure reported Monday night that Martin could try to move elsewhere at the end of the current campaign while suspending his immediate future.

“I think while we’re sitting here right now there’s a good chance Dustin Martin won’t play in Richmond next year,” Sportsday said.

“Sydney is mentioned … he loved Sydney and if he wanted to go there, heaven and earth would move to make it a reality.

“Damien Hardwick recently said that if (Dustin Martin) wanted to go, he would go with the blessing (from Hardwick).

“But he has two years left on his deal, so it’s easier said than done.”

Martin will miss Richmond’s game against Gold Coast on Saturday after suffering a hamstring injury in the club’s victory against West Coast.

The 31-year-old has had an interrupted season so far, taking a personal injury earlier this year before missing the 14th round win over Carlton due to illness.
