SANTA CLARA – The top remaining priority for the 49ers this offseason is signing signing Deebo Samuel for a several-year contract extension.
There’s not so much urgency with defensive end Nick Bosa.
Coach Kyle Shanahan said Tuesday that the 49ers have not yet entered into contact talks with the Bosa representation. Teams can start negotiating contract extensions with draft picks after three seasons.
Bosa and Samuel were selected in the 2019 NFL Draft, and each completed their third year in the NFL last season.
Shanahan was asked if negotiations with Bosa have begun.
“They haven’t,” Shanahan replied. “I’m sure it’s a great tweet. I don’t know if it’s a great tweet or something, but no.”
As the No. 2 general election, Bosa signed a four-year, $ 33.55 million contract, which includes an initial bonus of nearly $ 22.5 million. The 49ers have already taken the fifth-year option with Bosa for the 2023 season at a fully guaranteed price of $ 17.859 million.
By comparison, Samuel’s original contract was for four years for $ 10.1 million. It is expected to earn $ 3.9 million this season, well below the market value of the All-Pro.
So while the 49ers and Samuel’s representation are hoping to get a new contract at the start of the training camp, there doesn’t seem to be the same accelerated schedule with Bosa because he’s already been well compensated for in his short career.
However, Shanahan said he expected Bosa to play the 49ers far beyond his initial contract.
“We haven’t done it with Nick yet, that’s just the way both parties are doing it now, and I’m not too worried,” Shanahan said. “I hope Nick Bosa stays here for a long time.”

Bosa did not participate in the voluntary part of the low season program. He trains near his home in the Miami area.
Bosa showed up at the 49ers on Monday for a physical exam and took part in some individual exercises on Tuesday the first day of the team’s mandatory mini-camp.
“Seeing him for the first time in a long time, Nick always cares as well as any athlete he’s been with,” Shanahan said. “She had a good tan in Florida when she saw him yesterday.
“His quads are still huge and he’s ready to play football whenever it’s time to leave.”
