Netflix’s The Crown, HBO’s Westworld, Prime Video’s The Boys and Hulu’s Handmaid’s Tale are among this year’s popular TV series that won’t be on the Primetime Emmy nominee list on Tuesday, but it won’t be because they go be rejected.
The eligibility period set by the Television Academy for its 2022 awards calls for the programs to be aired between June 1, 2021 and May 31, 2022. Many degree programs suffered delays. due to the pandemic, but it is a much smaller list than last year. .
The Crown was a big winner at last year’s Emmy Awards, taking home gold statuettes for the drama series; Actor and lead actress for Josh O’Connor and Olivia Colman, respectively; and Cast and Support Actress for Tobias Menzies and Gillian Anderson, respectively, among other accolades.
Since season 5 isn’t expected until the end of the year, this time there won’t be any sweep for the actual Netflix drama.
The original Hulu series Handmaid’s Tale garnered nominations last year facing many of the same categories as The Crown. Its next fifth season will premiere on September 14th. Depending on when the fifth season of The Crown premieres, it could end up facing The Handmaid’s Tale for the 2023 Grand Prix.

The long-awaited season 4 of Westworld is currently airing, but its release came after the Emmy eligibility window was closed. The Boys face a similar situation, as their third season premiered on June 3rd. Both seasons will be eligible for nominations next year.
Other fan favorite programs that won’t be eligible this year include The Mandalorian and Disney +’s Obi-Wan Kenobi.
With the loves of the awards season at the bank, it opens up the possibility of making dramas like Netflix’s Squid Game, Paramount’s Yellowstone, Showtime’s Yellowjackets, FX and Severance’s Reservation Dogs, and Apple TV + ’s Pachinko. Also after skipping last year’s Emmy cycle are beloved Succession awards, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Euphoria, Insecure, Barry, Ozark, Stranger Things, Russian Doll, The Morning Show, Killing Eve and What We Do In the Shadows.
For networks and streamers that opted for split-season releases, the former are eligible while the latter are not. This is the case with Netflix’s Stranger Things, volume 4 of season 4 is in progress but not volume 2, and AMC’s Better Call Saul, with its season 6 Part 1 eligible but part 2 not.
The hit comedy Hulu Only Murders in the Building, which is currently airing its second season, could be nominated on Tuesday, but for season 1.
Nominations for the 74th Annual Emmy Awards will be announced Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. PT. The winners will be announced during the live broadcast on September 12th.
