Will and Kate cheer Norrie to glory at Wimbledon Royal Box

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge joined in the chants of local fans who helped propel the 26-year-old to victory in a five-set battle against Belgian David Goffin.

And after a classic nail-biting action, the royal couple stood up to applaud the No. 1 and ninth British series leader who has won the heart of the nation.

The head of court number 1 was “Norrie, Norrie, Norrie, oi! Oi! Oi!”.

It was two sets to one when the Duke and Duchess reached the track after watching Novak Djokovic reach his 11th SW19 semi-final on the central track.

And the nail biter clearly reached out to the royal family and the 12,300 spectators in the arena at times, with William seemingly adjusting his tie before taking a deep breath at one point.

But after struggling to win by 3-6, 7-5, 2-6, 6-3, 7-5, a clearly emotional Norrie said, “I’m very happy to pass. Honestly, I’m speechless. I can’t even talk.

“I stayed as patient as I could and used my legs at the end to put the ball on the court.”

And, as he waited to face the six-time Serbian winner and defender, the lion’s heart number 12 promised: “It’s just getting harder. I’m sure you’ll get behind me and I’ll take the fight.”

Norrie was spotted by the weeping mother Helen, father David and girlfriend Louise Jacobi, 23, as he became the new home hero after the first outings of Emma Raducanu and double champion Andy Murray.

William and Kate, who is patron of the All England Club, cheered him on after seeing Djokovic’s five-set victory over rising Italian star Jannik Sinner. Kate’s parents, Michael and Carole Middleton, were also at the Royal Box yesterday.

Other celebrities who enjoyed the action included former Strictly Come Dancing star Oti Mabuse with her husband Marius Lepure, comedian and author David Walliams, and broadcast legends Sir David Dimbleby and Sir Trevor McDonald.
