John McEnroe has told Emma Raducanu to “strengthen the hype” after her Wimbledon defeat in the second round to Caroline Garcia on Wednesday.
The 19-year-old suffered a 6-3, 6-3 defeat on the center court as she struggled to find the form that saw her win the U.S. Open last year.
“Nerves play a role here, but he’s 19,” McEnroe, who has been a vocal critic of Raducanu in the past, told the BBC.
“I should be able to deal with it very quickly.
“I suspect and hope that important things will happen in the future, but you have to start believing, you know, strengthening the hype.
“She has to get into her comfort zone with whoever the people around her are. I don’t know who they are because she keeps changing teams as new coaches come in and out of the situation. That’s not good.
“But she has to figure it out and let’s not forget she won the U.S. Open. Some clueless ones don’t win the U.S. Open. She’s a great player. You have to look at it that way.”
