A group of Winnipeg high school students found a corpse in a field during a class exercise Friday.
Pembina Trails Division Superintendent Ted Fransen said students involved in a community cleanup day at the École South Pointe School were doing service education when they encountered the body in a field in front of the school.
The administration sent a letter to the school community notifying parents of what happened, he said.
“In this case, the school administration clearly and correctly believes that the entire school community should be aware of this,” Fransen said.
“It just happened, so I haven’t been told how the children are. I can only imagine that those who were closer to the situation would be quite traumatized.”

Fransen said police are investigating but are unaware of what has been discovered so far. CBC News asked Winnipeg police for details of the investigation on Friday, but received no response.
Orientation counselors at the École South Pointe School, resource teachers and division psychologists will be available early Monday to support students struggling with the finding, Fransen said.
