Pembina Trails School Division (PTSD) confirms to CTV News that a group of students found a body during the community clean-up at the École South Pointe school.
TED Fransen, the PTSD superintendent, confirmed that staff sent a letter home to parents about the incident.
The body was found by 7th and 8th graders on the west side of Tim Sale Drive and south of Waverly Street, according to the letter, outside the school property.
The letter said the students immediately returned to school and the police were called.
Winnipeg police said CTV News agents were investigating, but did not confirm what was being investigated.
The letter said the most affected students and staff met with the school’s social worker and psychologist and were given a space to talk about what happened.
A crisis response team will also go to school on Monday.
Fransen said the school division will not comment further on the matter because it is an active police investigation.
