Winter Solstice: Perth enjoys the sun on the shortest day of the year

If you feel like your days are flying by right now, it’s because they are.

The winter solstice is celebrated on Tuesday, the shortest day of the year in the southern hemisphere.

The sun will rise in Perth at 7.16am and will set at 5.20pm, meaning the city will only enjoy 10 hours, three minutes and 22 seconds of light.

Perth Observatory spokesman Matt Woods said the South Pole was currently tilted away from the sun and would now begin its long apparent journey north again through December.

Perth’s longest day will be December 22 with 14 hours, 14 minutes and 44 seconds of sunlight.

The exact time of the solstice will be Tuesday at 5:13 p.m.

“This is an exact time when the Sun’s decline is equal to 23.5 degrees south seen from Earth,” says Woods.

After Tuesday the days will get longer. Perth will receive one more second of sunlight on Wednesday, three seconds more on Thursday and six seconds more on Friday.

The winter solstice also means that temperatures will be slightly cooler in the morning, due to later sunrises.

Perth is expected to drop to just 7ºC on Saturday morning.
