An unsuspecting swimmer was bitten while a wild boar was walking along a beach on the Costa del Sol.

The disoriented animal ran out of the sea and charged at the 67-year-old woman, before rescuers quickly sounded the alarm.

Emergency services were called to Albir beach around 11 a.m. this morning, while lifeguards chased the animal away from swimmers.

The woman later sought treatment for a “minor” leg injury at a local health center and was given a course of antibiotics to prevent infection.

The wild boar had been seen in the water by boat crews who had warned lifeguards on the beach that they tried unsuccessfully to catch it.

It is believed that it came from the nearby Serra Gelada Natural Park, which stretches through Benidorm, Alfaz del Pi and Altea. It is now unknown where the animal is.

The attack comes days after the nearby resort of Dénia prepared to use archers to protect tourists from wild animals walking at night.

Officials had considered the use of strategically placed cage traps equipped with cameras to allow authorities to track the number of wild boars entering the city, but the trial was not fruitful.

Since then, councilors have confirmed they are in contact with archers, as it would not be legal to use weapons.

They hope that the shooters will be able to prevent the wild boars from eating the farmers’ crops, causing traffic accidents and trampling the golf courses.
