After a brief appearance on State of Play last week, the upcoming sci-fi shooter The Callisto Protocol received a full gameplay demo during today’s Summer Game Fest opening show.
Not surprisingly, the violence of the Callisto Protocol has not abated in the last seven days, so expect some really horrible moments in the style of Dead Space when it comes to PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X / S and PC on December 2nd. Today’s preview, for example, included gameplay footage of a new weapon known as the Grip, which acts as a gravity pistol.
The Callisto protocol is currently under development at Striking Distance Studios, led by Dead Space creator Glen Schofield. Although originally set hundreds of years into the future of PlayerUnknown’s constantly expanding Battlegrounds universe, the Callisto protocol is now thought to be a divorced independent story from the pioneering battle royale game, according to a May Schofield tweet.
“As a game director, there’s nothing more satisfying than taking players on a terrifying journey that leaves them long after they’ve left the controller,” Schofield said after the State of Play preview. “Survival horror games have been my passion for decades and I’m excited to take advantage of the latest consoles to take the genre to terrifying new places when we release The Callisto Protocol later this year.”
After frightening everyone with Dead Space, Schofield founded Sledgehammer Games in 2009. Activision soon acquired the studio to help develop the Call of Duty franchise, including games such as Modern Warfare 3, Advanced Warfare, WWII, Modern Warfare. reboot, Black Ops Cold War and Vanguard. Schofield left Sledgehammer Games in 2019 to join Striking Distance Studios.
The Callisto protocol seeks to be a worthy successor to the Dead Space franchise, even with a next-generation remake of the first game on the way. And really, it’s good to see Schofield back in the genre where he first left his mark instead of doing annual military propaganda for a besieged company like Activision.
