Washington Post’s “Internet culture” journalist Taylor Lorenz is criticized for falsely claiming to have contacted youtubers in her story about the explosive Johnny Depp-Amber Heard trial.
On Thursday, after the surprising conclusion of the success of Depp’s defamation suit against his ex-wife, Lorenz claimed that the real winners were “content creators” who benefited from the courtroom frenzy with more followers and revenue peaks.

His article cites two YouTube personalities, “LegalBytes” host Alyte Mazeika and an anonymous user named ThatUmbrellaGuy. Lorenz claimed that according to Business Insider, Mazeika “earned $ 5,000 in one week by rotating the content of her YouTube channel to non-stop testing coverage and analysis.” He also claimed that ThatUmbrellaGuy “earned up to $ 80,000 last month, according to an estimate by social analytics firm Social Blade.”

In the paragraph there was a statement in parentheses that said, “Mazeika and ThatUmbrellaGuy did not respond to requests for comment.”
Both Mazeika and That UmbrellaGuy refuted the statement, saying Lorenz never contacted them before the publication of their story.
“Um. Does that say I didn’t respond to requests for comment? I know I’ve received a lot of emails in the last two months, but I just checked your name, @TaylorLorenz, and I don’t see any emails from you. “Mazeika called the Washington Post columnist. “Besides, I didn’t pivot all of a sudden. I started covering this before the trial started.”

Mazeika accused Lorenz of misinterpreting her coverage by Business Insider, which she also thought was “unfair.” She later provided an update stating that Lorenz contacted her to comment “after the piece was already published and I had to call her.”
“That’s so stupid,” Mazeika wrote.
Lorenz seemed to acknowledge Mazeika’s public complaint, tweeting “Thank you for responding!” and that “would love to incorporate your comments!”

ThatUmbrellaGuy called the Post article the same way.
“The Washington Post lied and did NOT contact me before including me in his Johnny Depp story, despite reporting that they did,” the YouTuber tweeted, sharing time stamps from his tweet. calling Lorenz’s article and email that he sent her minutes later.

The Washington Post article appeared to have been stealthily edited, dismissing the claim that Lorenz had contacted YouTubers for comment without a note from the editor acknowledging the change.
The Washington Post did not immediately respond to Fox News’ request for comment. Fox News also contacted Mazeika and ThatUmbrellaGuy for comment.

Lorenz has long been criticized for her journalistic ethics. In 2020, he repeatedly unveiled Trump’s assistant daughter Kellyanne Conway’s 15-year-old daughter for the teen’s open TikTok posts and allegedly contacted the minor directly without her parents ’permission.
Conway recently set Lorenz on fire for obsessing over his daughter, referring to her as “Peter Pan”.
In 2021, Lorenz falsely accused business technology entrepreneur Marc Andreessen of “using r-slur,” which he admitted was a mistake.
