In a major political upheaval, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky fired both the nation’s attorney general and the leader of his national intelligence agency, The New York Times reported. In a televised speech on Sunday, Zelensky said he was firing Iryna Venediktova and Ivan Bakanov, prosecutor general and leader of the Ukrainian Security Service, respectively, because investigations into treason had revealed that members of his agencies had collaborated with Russia. According to Zelensky, officials have opened 651 cases of high treason to the police authorities and it was found that more than 60 employees of the offices of the dismissed administrators were working against Ukraine. “Such a set of crimes against the foundations of national security … raise very serious questions for relevant leadership,” Zelensky said. The dismissal marks the most significant alteration to Zelensky’s government since Russia invaded Ukraine.
