An adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenksy has admitted that Lysychansk, the last Ukrainian-controlled city in the Lugansk region, could fall into the hands of Russian forces as fighting intensifies this weekend.
Oleksiy Arestovych says Russian forces crossed the Siversky Donets River and were approaching the city from the north.
Arestovych says: “This is really a threat. We’ll see. I don’t rule out any of a series of results here. Things will become much clearer in a day or two.”
Rodion Miroshnik, Russia’s ambassador to the pro-Moscow Luhansk People’s Republic, told Russian television that Lysychansk had been “controlled” but “not yet released.”
The governor of Luhansk region, Serhiy Haidai, says the assault on Lysychansk has not stopped, with the Russians approaching the besieged city from all sides.
