9,000-passenger cruise unfinished and unwanted to be scrapped

What was supposed to be one of the largest cruise ships in the world is preparing for its maiden voyage: a scrap yard.

Global Dream II, which was designed to accommodate more than 9,000 passengers, had almost ended up in a shipyard on the Baltic coast of Germany. However, shipbuilder MV Werften filed for bankruptcy in January 2022 and administrators cannot find a buyer for Global Dream II.

German cruise industry magazine An Bord reported that the hull of the ship’s hull should be removed for the price of scrap metal.

Administrator Christoph Morgen told a news conference on Friday that the ship had to be moved from MV Werften’s Wismar shipyard later this year because the ship had been sold to the Thyssenkrupp naval unit, which plans to build it. – military ships.

Cruise demand has plummeted since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic.

The Global Dream II and its sister ship Global Dream, which is not currently being scrapped, would have been the largest cruise ships in the world for passenger capacity when finished.

At 208,000 tons, it would have been the sixth largest cruise ship in size, just behind the Royal Caribbean’s five Oasis-class ships.
