A child dies after being hit by a car while chasing a dog

A young boy has died after being hit by a car when he ran onto the road while chasing a dog west of Sydney.

Emergency services arrived on Richmond Road, Doonside, after a six-year-old boy was hit by a car around 1 p.m.

NSW Chief Ambulance Inspector Brian Parsell said the boy was believed to have run off the road while chasing a dog.

The six-year-old has been left in critical condition. (9 News)

“Unfortunately, he was hit by a passing car,” Parsell said.

Paramedics and flight helicopter crews resuscitated the boy at the scene.

He was taken to hospital with critical injuries where he later died.

“The driver of the car is assisting the police with the investigation,” NSW police said in a statement.

The crime scene has been set.
