A major threat removed from Wimbledon as COVID-19 sinks Matteo Berrettini

The Wimbledon men’s singles draw has a lesser rival after 2021 finalist Matteo Berrettini retired due to the COVID-19.

The Italian world number 11, who lost to Novak Djokovic in the 2021 final, tested positive for the virus and withdrew just two hours before his inaugural match began.

Berrettini had to face Cristian Garin in the first round of the All England Club tournament, but the lucky Elias Ymer will now face the 43rd in the Chilean world.

“It broke my heart to announce that I need to retire,” Berrettini posted on Instagram.

“While the symptoms were not severe, I decided it was important to do another test this morning to protect the health and safety of my fellow competitors and everyone involved in the tournament.

“I have no words to describe the extreme disappointment (sic) I feel.

“The dream is over for this year, but I will come back stronger.

“Thanks for the support.”

Berrettini’s retirement is a boost for Nick Kyrgios and Alex de Minaur as the Australians chase their first Grand Slam titles.

Berrettini’s COVID-19 coup follows the withdrawal of 2014 U.S. Open champion Marin Cilic, who retired from Wimbledon after testing positive for the virus on Monday.

Berrettini has won seven individual ATP titles and defeated young Felix Auger-Aliassime in a quarter-final at Wimbledon last year.

The big star lost to Djokovic in the decisive 7-6 (4) 4-6 4-6 3-6.
