A man arrested after sexually assaulting at least five women in downtown Victoria

Victoria police say a man was arrested Saturday night after officers saw him sexually assaulting women.

Officers were called to 1100 block of Douglas Street shortly after 9 p.m. to report that a man was sexually assaulting people.

When officers arrived, they saw the man approaching a group of women and sexually assaulting them from behind. VicPD says he was arrested immediately.

He is in custody and faces several recommended sexual assault charges.

While officers spoke to the three women who had been observed to have been sexually assaulted, two more women, one of whom VicPD describes as young, told officers they had been sexually assaulted by the man.

None of the women knew the man, according to police.

In a statement, VicPD says none of the women needed medical attention, but at least one was beaten hard enough to throw her to the ground.

Officers believe there may be other victims who have not yet spoken to police.

“From the initial call for information about the service and witnesses, investigators believe the suspect sexually assaulted other people who have not yet testified,” VicPD says in a statement.
