The homicide team is investigating after a gunman was killed last night in police custody in the far northwest of Victoria.
Police attended Vine Court in Robinvale after it was reported that a man wanted by police for various assaults was in the area shortly before 5.30pm on Sunday.
When officers entered the backyard of a house on Vine Court, they found a 35-year-old man armed with a knife.
The man was sprayed with pepper and placed in police custody before he could respond.
“Attending officers immediately sought medical attention and performed CPR on the man, but he could not be resurrected,” a Victoria police spokeswoman said.
The death will now be investigated by the homicide team and the professional standards command, which the police spokeswoman said was “a common practice when a person dies in police custody”.
