One dead after a shooting

At least six police units were at the scene shortly before 8pm on 25th Avenue on Friday

A shooting that took place Friday night in Vernon has left one man dead and police are investigating what they believe to be a targeted incident.
The Vernon North Okanagan RCMP responded to a report of gunfire shortly before 6 p.m. in a residential building on Block 5300 25th Avenue in Vernon.
Front-line officers who responded to the scene found a 38-year-old man suffering from gunshot wounds.
The RCMP stated that the victim succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Vernon North Okanagan RCMP Serious Crimes Unit has conducted the investigation.
Police had closed 25th Avenue and the area has been secured and will remain cordoned off as officers conduct the site examination and continue the investigation.
“Preliminary findings from the investigation suggest that this is a targeted incident,” said Vernon North Okanagan RCMP operations officer Blake MacLeod in a press release.
“The police are known to the victim and we do not believe that public safety is in jeopardy.”
Police are interested in speaking with anyone who has witnessed the incident and ask anyone with script camera footage or surveillance footage in the area to contact police directly and immediately at (250) 545- 7171.
No additional information is available for release at this time.

On Friday evening, there are several police units on 25th Avenue in front of Landing Plaza in Vernon.
Castanet reporter Jon Manchester is at the scene and reports that a crime scene has been set up in front of the Landing Meadows townhouses across the street.
Reports circulating on social media allege that shots were heard in the early afternoon.
Traffic is cut off on 25th Avenue in the area.
