A note on Rebel Wilson

On Saturday, The Herald published an article about Australian actor Rebel Wilson and his new partner Ramona Agruma. The article was published online and was a small article on page 36 of Saturday’s print edition.

The article has garnered some public attention, and I’ve been reading these comments closely. In the interest of transparency, I wanted to offer the Herald’s opinion on this issue.

Our weekly private Sydney celebrity column last week asked Wilson if he wanted to comment on his new partner. We would have asked ourselves the same questions if Wilson’s new partner was a man.

Say that the Herald Wilson is wrong.

As other mastheads do every day, we only asked questions and, as standard practice, we included a deadline for an answer. He had made no decision on whether or what to publish, and the Herald’s decision on what to do would have been informed by any response provided by Wilson.

Wilson made the decision to publicly reveal his new partner, which had been a feature of his social media accounts for months.

Private Sydney is a column in which the writer’s interaction with his themes is often part of the story. Saturday’s piece followed this topic to give readers information about our interaction with Wilson and his public relations team. This was not standard news.

We wish Wilson and Agruma the best of luck.
