A shark attacks a snorkeler off the British coast

A diver attacked by a shark off the UK coast was injured in the leg and had to be taken to hospital, according to the coastguard.

A rescue team received the victim at Penzance Harbor in Cornwall on Thursday after the suspected shark bite.

Shark attacks in UK waters are rare, and this would be the first report of an injury since 2018.

A spokesperson for the Coastguard and Maritime Agency said: “HM Coastguard dispatched the Penzance Coastguard Rescue Team to meet a diver who suffered a suspected shark bite.

“The coastguard was alerted shortly before 12.30pm on Thursday July 28. The swimmer is believed to have suffered a leg injury.

“The coastguard team met the victim in Penzance harbor to assist in transferring them to the care of the ambulance service.”

The local ambulance service confirmed that paramedics were called to an incident on the Penzance coast and a patient was taken to Truro Hospital.

In 2018, a fisherman was bitten on the leg by a shark after taking the animal to his boat off the coast of Cornwall.
