An incapacitated speeding driver fatally injured an 80-year-old man when he hit him on a Birmingham road and then fled the scene. Amaan Isa, who had poor eyesight and should have been wearing glasses, was traveling at almost twice the speed limit.
Isa, 28, of College Road, Alum Rock, who had previously admitted to causing death by dangerous driving, lacking insurance and driving while disabled, was jailed for six years and eight months. He was also banned from driving for five years and four months.
Irshad Begum had been crossing Washwood Heath Road on Hodge Hill near her home on April 5 this year when she was hit at around 4.35pm and suffered “catastrophic injuries”.

Robert Price, who is on trial in Birmingham Crown Court, said that just before the collision two police officers were walking and saw a VW Golf being driven at excessive speed and heard an “engine roar”. He said that shortly afterwards they were informed by the public that the vehicle had been involved in a collision.
A driver also heard the roar of the engine and saw Mrs. Begum trying to get away from the road but was then thrown into the air towards the central reserve. Price said the driver, Isa, did not stop, but “overtook,” cut another car and overtook and caused other vehicles to flee.

He said the speed he had been traveling at the time of the impact was about 56 mph. Isa later left the Gulf, which belonged to her brother, and he had taken it without permission, in a parking lot. Defendant turned himself in at Perry Barr police station at 10:45 p.m. after speaking with members of his family.
In a statement, the victim’s daughter, Naazima Kauser, said: “On April 5, just after 4 p.m., the mother left home for a quick trip to the local shops, but never return home.The mother was beaten on the way back, just a few minutes walk from her house.

“Mother was a loving and loving person who was loved by many. It breaks our hearts to accept that she will never return home with us. Our family is broken and our lives will never be the same again.”
Judge Avik Mukherjee said in his ruling: “The court warned you earlier, but you ignored these warnings with devastating and tragic consequences. Your conduct on April 5 has destroyed many lives, especially the Mrs. Begum, who has paid the final price and lost her life.
“You destroyed the lives of all your friends and family. You drove when you should never drive a car. You didn’t have a driver’s license or insurance and you were disqualified. You drove at excessive speed, almost twice the legal limit.
“You admitted you weren’t wearing glasses and you told the police you had to wear them for everything. You made a determined effort to leave the scene and stay away from this criminal behavior.” He said roaring witnesses had heard that Isa had been driving with “aggressive acceleration.”
Defender Graham Henson said Isa had turned himself in to police, who were remorseful and ashamed of what he had done.
