DALLAS –
A man broke into the Dallas Museum of Art and caused more than $ 5 million in damage, including the breaking of three ancient Greek artifacts before he was arrested, police said.
Brian Hernandez, 21, is charged with $ 300,000 or more, serving a five-year life sentence. He was released Thursday in Dallas County Jail on $ 100,000 bail. Prison records do not include any attorneys for Hernandez.
According to police, Hernandez used a metal chair to enter the museum around 9:45 p.m. Wednesday and began a destructive attack.
He broke into a display case and broke a Greek amphora from the 6th century BC and a Greek pot dating back to 450 BC. Police say the two items alone were worth about $ 5 million. A $ 100,000 BC bowl worth about $ 100,000 and a $ 10,000 Caddo effigy ceramic bottle were also broken.
The security of the building was rushed to arrest Hernandez, who was unarmed, police said. It was not immediately known what caused the incident.
The attack came three days after a man disguised as an elderly woman threw a glass cake protecting the Mona Lisa at the Louvre Museum in Paris. The assault left a creamy white spot on the glass, but the Mona Lisa was not harmed.
