LONDON – Canadians Bianca Andreescu and Denis Shapovalov were eliminated from Wimbledon after suffering second-round defeats at the All England Tennis Club on Thursday.
Andreescu of Missisauga, Ontario fell 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) to Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan, while Shapovalov of Richmond Hill, Ontario fell 6-2, 4-6. 6-. 1, 7-6 (8-6) to American Brandon Nakashima on Thursday.
Rybakina fired four aces at Andreescu’s two and converted three of four break points.
Rybakina also earned 80% of his first service points, while Andreescu earned 65% of his.
“I didn’t expect his service to be so good … he played well, and he was getting a lot of balls. He was pretty solid, both sides. He played a very big game,” Andreescu said.
Rybakina, 23, 17th seed in the women’s draw, will then face 19-year-old Chinese Qinwen Zheng in the third round of the tournament.
Andreescu, 22, advanced to the second round at the All England Tennis Club for the first time in his career after beating American Emina Bektas 6-1, 6-3 in Tuesday’s first game.
Shapovalov, 13th seed in the men’s draw, committed eight double fouls in his loss to Nakashima.
Shapovalov, 23, reached the semi-finals at the All England Club last year, his best result in a Grand Slam tournament.
Nakashima, 20, who ranks 56th in the world rankings, will face Daniel Elahi Galan. The Colombian advanced to the third round when Roberto Bautista Agut retired from the tournament after testing positive for COVID-19.
Gabriela Dabrowski of Ottawa, the only Canadian left at Wimbledon, will play the second round doubles draw tomorrow. Dabrowski and his partner Giuliana Olmos from Mexico, the third seed in the tournament, will face Marta Kostyuk from Ukraine and Tereza Martincová from the Czech Republic.
Dabrowski and Olmos sent the duo of Yanina Wickmayer of Belgium and Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan 6-7, 6-3, 6-2 in their first-round match on Thursday.
