Owners of Apple’s latest iPhones can expect a major camera update later this year, thanks to two significant improvements promised in the upcoming release of iOS 16.
According to Apple’s official website with iOS 16, the iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max smartphones will receive an update to the Portrait mode of the camera which enhances the bokeh effect by adding artificial blur to the foreground and in the background.

This should make the effect of Portrait mode even more realistic by more accurately simulating the look of professional cameras with wide-aperture lenses. Blurring the background of a portrait will make the subject appear, but a real wide-aperture lens would also blur the extreme foreground.
Deliberately blurring objects in the foreground can also serve as a great way to frame the subject in your photo, so in addition to enhanced realism, this new feature will bring new creative possibilities to your iPhone photography.
Apple’s second update promises similar improvements to video, where the movie mode is set to get more accurate depth-of-field effects for profile shots, as well as for the edges of hair and glasses.
It’s great to see that Apple is offering unexpected quality improvements to the iPhone 13 so close to the launch of the iPhone 14. According to Dxomark, the iPhone 13 Pro suffers from some in-depth estimation errors in Portrait mode. especially highlighting the areas around the hair as an example of the issue.
Maybe the new iPhone 14 camera will bring a really special and essential update at the end of the year, but iOS 16, at least, will allow iPhone 13 owners to mentally add a couple of points to the current Dxomark score from his camera.
